Prerequisites
Before you start, make sure:
- The Reporting enhanced experience has been enabled for your organization. Contact support@radai.com to request access.
- Any required integrations for your Reporting environment are configured and working, as confirmed by Rad AI.
Overview
The enhanced experience was built to give Rad AI Reporting a faster, stronger, and more flexible foundation for report editing. It replaces the classic editing surface with a rebuilt experience that better addresses issues such as unpredictable crashes and cursor movement. It also improves dictation performance and makes it easier for Rad AI to continue evolving the product.
For users, this means both a more reliable day-to-day reporting experience and access to additional capabilities that aren’t available in the classic experience, such as drag-and-drop text reorganization, customizable workspace layouts, custom status workflows, and audio review. It also creates a more robust platform for future improvements across formatting, validation, and other report editing workflows.
During rollout, some users may still be using the Reporting classic experience while others use the Reporting enhanced experience. This article is intended to help you understand what’s different in the enhanced experience, and what parts of the Reporting workflow remain familiar.
How the rollout works
Rad AI is rolling out the Reporting enhanced experience in phases so customers can adopt it in a controlled way.
During this transition period, the Reporting classic experience and the Reporting enhanced experience will exist in tandem as customers migrate over. Depending on your organization’s rollout stage, users may all be on the classic experience, all be on the enhanced experience, or temporarily split across both. Rad AI will continue supporting the classic experience during the transition.
Access to the enhanced experience is coordinated by Rad AI as part of your organization’s migration plan. When it is time for your organization to begin the migration process, Rad AI will reach out to coordinate the approach and timing with your team.
What’s different in the Reporting enhanced experience
The enhanced experience retains the core reporting workflow, but some parts of the interface look and behave differently than they do in the classic experience.
Report workspace
To access the report workspace:
- Hover over the Reports icon in the main navigation menu on the left-hand side.
- Select a report list, such as All studies.
- Double-click a report to open it in the report workspace.
Key actions and information
In the Reporting enhanced experience:
- Actions such as Draft and Sign are located in the header rather than the editor toolbar. This keeps report-level actions separate from text formatting controls.
- Other actions are located in a dedicated More menu, rather than nested under the Sign button in the classic experience:
- Actions in the More menu that existed in the classic experience include:
- Mark the report as Ready for review
- Sign preliminary report
- Print report
-
Delete report
- Actions in the More menu that are new to the enhanced experience include:
- (If defined by your site administrator) Actions tied to custom report statuses, e.g., “Send to correctionist”. Learn more about custom statuses.
- Copy report content, which copies all text in the editor to your clipboard.
-
Edit layout, which allows you to customize how panels are arranged in your report workspace. Learn more.
- Actions in the More menu that existed in the classic experience include:
- The microphone activation/deactivation button (and related settings) is grouped next to other key actions, such as More, Draft, and Sign. Learn more about speech.
-
Key report information, such as procedure, accession number, patient data, reason for exam, ordering provider, sending facility, and report authors are displayed in a more compact view. Priority is now displayed where it was not displayed in the Reporting classic experience.
💡 You can also click a piece of information in the workspace header to copy it to your clipboard.
Panel and tab layout
The Reporting enhanced experience gives you more control over how panels and tabs are arranged in your report workspace.
You can:
- Click, hold, and drag dividers to resize panels/tabs.
- Click, hold, and drag tabs to relocate them.
- Click the double-arrow icon to collapse or expand the left, right, and bottom panels.
- Adjust how tabs are arranged and save custom layouts using the layout editor.
Using the layout editor
To access the layout editor, click More in the report workspace and select Edit layout.
In the Edit layout dialog you can:
- Click, drag, and drop a tab to display it within the left, right, or bottom panel.
- Within a panel, drop the tab below a divider line to separate it from other tabs, or drop it next to another tab to group them together.
- Click, drag, and drop a tab into the Not in layout section to hide it from the report workspace.
- Click the left/right arrows in the Bottom section to expand the bottom panel under the left panel, right panel, or both.
- Click Default, Review, Minimal, and Wide to apply layouts that were preconfigured by Rad AI.
-
Click Save as new layout to save your own custom layout. Type in a name for your layout, then click Save.
💡 This button only becomes available once you edit a preconfigured layout.
- Click the three-dot icon next to a custom layout to Rename, Save changes, or Delete.
- Click the lock icon to freeze the current layout and avoid accidental edits.
- Click Done to exit the layout editor.
Exam details and associated studies
The Reporting enhanced experience brings exam-related information together in a more convenient way.
Exam details are available in the Exam tab (“Study” in the classic experience), and associated studies are shown there rather than in a separate “Associate studies” tab as per the classic experience.
This lets you:
- See related studies in one place
- Expand associated study details when needed
-
Keep supporting context close to the report you’re editing
💡 You can also click a piece of information to copy it to your clipboard.
Speech
In the enhanced experience, it’s easier to manage audio input/output devices, microphone settings, and speech services:
-
The speech menu—accessed via the microphone button drop-down arrow—has been redesigned and now includes advanced microphone settings such as echo cancelation, noise suppression, and granular voice activity detection (VAD) controls:
⚠️ We recommend leaving these settings unchanged unless you are troubleshooting a speech issue.- Echo Cancellation — Reduces echo from speaker output being picked up by your microphone. Disable if audio sounds hollow.
- Noise Suppression — Filters background noise such as fans, hum, and room tone. Disable if it cuts off the beginning of words.
- Auto Gain Control — Automatically adjusts microphone volume to keep levels more consistent. Disable if volume is inconsistent, or if using background speech filtering.
- Speech Threshold — Sets the probability, from 0% to 100%, that a sound must be identified as speech before the system starts a segment.
- Silence Threshold — Sets the probability, from 0% to 100%, below which a sound is treated as silence.
- Pre-speech Pad — Controls how much audio is captured just before speech begins.
-
Redemption — Sets how long the system waits after silence before ending a segment.
- The status of Rad AI speech services is displayed in the speech menu for at-a-glance feedback and troubleshooting. You can select a speech service to switch to that service—without having to go to your Personal Settings.
Report Checker
In the Reporting enhanced experience, Report Checker is no longer a dedicated tab.
Instead, report-checking guidance appears inline as you work in the report. This means you can review and address issues directly in the editor instead of switching to a separate workspace tab.
Right-click an underlined word or phrase to review report check options.
Template double-click action
Use the Template Double-Click Action setting in Personal Settings > Editor to choose what should happen when you double-click a template in the Templates tab of the report workspace.
You can choose from these options:
- Apply template (replace report content) — replaces the current report content with the selected template.
- Insert template (insert at cursor) — inserts the selected template at the current cursor location in the report editor.
This setting applies only to templates. Macros are always inserted.
Advance automatically through signing queue
You can advance through all the reports listed in the signing queue automatically instead of returning to the report list after taking action on a report such as signing it.
To automatically advance through the listed reports, click Auto Advance:
After you've taken action on all the reports in the list, the Signing queue is empty. You are returned to the Drafts report list.
Report editor
Dictation
Compared to the classic experience, dictation in the enhanced experience gives you better feedback and is more reliable:
- When the microphone is active, there’s a thicker border around the report editor to make it more obvious that recording is in progress.
- You can also change the color and width of the microphone-active border in Personal Settings > Appearance > Dictation Appearance.
- You can also change the color and width of the microphone-active border in Personal Settings > Appearance > Dictation Appearance.
- Instances of unexpected cursor jumping and dictated text appearing in the wrong place have been reduced.
-
Voice commands, such as “next field”, sequence correctly without interfering with ongoing dictation. The enhanced experience also supports new voice commands.
- Capitalization and spacing are correctly applied on a more consistent basis.
- Navigation between report fields is generally faster.
Text
In the enhanced experience:
- Purple text indicates content inserted by another user as part of a multi-author workflow, making it easier to understand edits by other authors.
- You can preview your customized report editor text colors in Personal Settings > Appearance > Report Editor Preview, so you can see the effects of your edits without having to close Personal Settings.
- You can reorder report content by dragging and dropping it within the editor. This is useful when you want to:
- Reorder findings
- Move a paragraph to a new location
- Adjust the order of impression content without cutting and pasting
- You can disable or enable this drag and drop feature, which is enabled by default. Go to Personal Settings > Editor > Display > Drag-and-Drop Content Reordering and click the toggle. When the setting is disabled, the drag handles do not display in reports.
Editor toolbar and text formatting
The toolbar at the top of the editor includes familiar formatting tools, such as:
- Bold
- Italic
- Numbered lists
- Bulleted lists
- Undo and redo
In the enhanced experience, new tools include:
- Adjust text size (75% - 200%)
- Underline
- Apply capitalization
- Apply lowercase
- Adjust line and paragraph spacing
Voice commands
New voice commands
The Reporting enhanced experience adds support for several voice commands in the report editor.
You can use these commands to move through the report and make quick edits without leaving dictation:
- “Backspace” — deletes the character immediately before the cursor.
- "New line" — starts a new line of text.
- “Page up” — scrolls the report up.
- “Page down” — scrolls the report down.
- “Exit Omni Box” — moves focus from the Omni Box back to the report editor.
- “Beginning of line” — moves the cursor to the start of the current line.
- “End of line” — moves the cursor to the end of the current line.
Learn more about voice commands.
Unsupported voice commands
The following voice commands are available in the Reporting classic experience, but not in the enhanced experience:
- "Toggle panel" or "show panel" or "hide panel" — Shows/hides the bottom panel of the Reporting workspace
- "Toggle left panel" or "show left panel" or "hide left panel" — Shows/hides the left panel of the Reporting workspace
- "Toggle right panel" or "show right panel" or "hide right panel" — Shows/hides the right panel of the Reporting workbench
This is intentional, since you can easily expand and collapse workspace panels by clicking the double-arrow icons. Learn more.
Picklists
The Reporting enhanced experience includes several picklist improvements:
- Picklists now behave more reliably when you open and close them from the down-arrow caret. After you select an option or replace content from a template, the picklist menu continues to open and close more consistently.
- You can control picklist auto-open behavior in Personal Settings > Editor > Auto-Open Picklist. When enabled, picklists automatically open on navigating to them.
- Speech-driven picklist selection is also more reliable. If you pick an option by voice, the cursor now stays at the end of the field after the selection is made, so you can continue dictating more smoothly.
Priors
You can add a prior study to the comparison field/section of your report directly from the Priors tab.
To add the prior study, click the + button:
Signing reports with empty fields
When your settings allow the Sign Report Confirmation dialog to display, empty fields can either block signing, listed but not block signing, or ignored, depending on your personal setting.
If enabled, empty fields (required or non-required, depending on the setting) are listed, and you can fill them in before signing the report from this dialog.
To change the behavior to warn or block, change the setting in Personal Settings > Editor > Empty Fields Behavior:
- Allow signing (default) won't block signing, and doesn't show any empty fields
- Warn before signing won't block signing and shows all empty fields, allowing you to fill them in from the dialog
- Require all fields blocks signing until all empty fields are filled, which you can do from the dialog
Undo addendum signing
If your organization and personal settings allow, you can undo an addendum signing:
-
Review Personal Settings > Editor > Time Limit for Undo Sign to ensure you have a value greater than zero for the time limit, and that Addendums: apply when signing addendums is enabled. If the organization-wide settings (controlled by an Admin) don't allow you to change the time limit or Addendums setting, you won't be able to make changes.
- Open a report, add an addendum, and sign it. You are returned to Drafts worklist.
- Within the time limit, click Undo Sign.
- A dialog asks you to confirm. If you confirm, the addendum is unsigned and you are returned to the report editor displaying the addendum.
- You can modify the addendum and continue, or delete the addendum with More > Delete Report, which returns the report to its original state (report signed, no addendum).
Snap selection behavior
The Reporting enhanced experience includes personal settings that control how text selection behaves in the report editor. You can adjust these settings in Personal Settings > Editor.
-
Snap Selection to Word Boundaries — Use to control when a highlighted selection should snap outward to full words. The value you enter determines when snapping begins:
- 0 means selections never snap to word boundaries.
- 1 means selections always snap to word boundaries.
- A higher number means snapping starts only after the selection covers at least that many words.
-
Skip Word Snap for Numbers — Enable if you do not want number-only selections to snap to word boundaries. This can be useful when you need to select or edit numeric values more precisely, such as measurements, dates, or identifiers, without the selection expanding automatically.
New features for the Reporting enhanced experience
Custom report statuses
The Reporting enhanced experience supports custom report statuses for organizations that use intermediate workflows before final signature. A custom status can help teams route reports through internal review steps before signing.
Examples include statuses such as:
- Under correction
- In billing review
- On hold
If custom statuses are enabled for your organization and set up by your admin, you can apply them to reports by clicking More and selecting the corresponding action.
Correctionist workflow and dictation playback
The Reporting enhanced experience supports the correctionist workflow, which lets a radiologist dictate a report, send it to a correctionist to review the audio and text, and then receive it back for final review and signing.
In particular, any other user with the required permissions can use dictation playback controls to review audio for dictated report content. This is useful for correction and speech troubleshooting, and can be done:
- In the report preview in report lists
- In the report editor
Populating observation field default values from HL7 data
HL7-driven observation defaults let your organization automatically populate observation field default values using incoming HL7 data. When a report is created, matching observation values are populated automatically, reducing manual data entry while still allowing report authors to review and edit values before signing.
Admins can configure observation formulas to populate both text and select-type observation fields based on incoming HL7 data.
What stays the same in the Reporting enhanced experience
Although the Reporting enhanced experience changes parts of the interface and introduces new capabilities, core reporting workflows remain familiar:
- You’ll still open, edit, draft, and sign reports in Rad AI Reporting as usual.
- Downstream report delivery behavior remains the same.
- All Personal Settings in the Reporting classic experience are supported in the enhanced experience.
- Existing Reporting features and workflows remain supported, including commonly used tools such as templates and macros, subject to your organization’s configuration.
- Admin tools, such as user, role, and site management, observation configuration, org-wide “System Config” settings, and the Report Manager remain the same.
